Follow This’ climate change move shot down at Shell’s AGM

first_imgMajority of Shell’s shareholders on Tuesday voted down a special proposal placed by a shareholder group called Follow This, which called for Shell to set specific emissions targets aligned with the Paris Climate agreement.Follow This is a group of Shell shareholders whose mission statement reads:”We’re going to make the world sustainable quicker by making Shell a renewable energy company. We can achieve this by becoming shareholders in droves.”This is a part of the text of the proposal titled “Shareholders support Shell to align its targets with the Paris Climate Agreement” put forth by Follow This ahead of the annual general meeting of the company:“Shareholders support Shell to take leadership in the energy transition to a net-zero-emission energy system. Therefore, shareholders request Shell to set and publish targets that are aligned with the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2°C.These targets need to cover the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of Shell’s operations and the use of its energy products, they need to include long-term (2050) and intermediate objectives, to be quantitative, and to be reviewed regularly.“We request that the company base these targets on tangible metrics such as GHG intensity metrics (GHG emissions per unit of energy produced) or to use other metrics that the company finds suitable to align its targets with a well-below 2°C pathway. Shareholders request that annual reporting include information about plans and progress to achieve these targets. You have our support. The energy transition is complicated, the end-goal is straightforward: a net-zero-emission energy system.” “Let us lead!” Offshore Energy Today Staff Shell CEO Ben van Beurden said on Wednesday:”…In November, I laid out your company’s Net Carbon Footprint ambition. Shell is collaborating with leading technical experts to review and verify the methodology.“This ambition is all about keeping the company in step with society’s progress towards Paris. That means exploring and developing the business opportunities in the global shift to a low-carbon energy system.”“The Net Carbon Footprint ambition must make sense to you, our investors, not only from a moral and societal point of view, but also from an economic point of view. This ambition is truly industry-leading: nobody else comes close.”Shell CEO: “Your company wants to lead. We ask you to let us. Follow us!”Speaking further to the shareholders Van Beurden added:”The ambition requires Shell to take a broader and more meaningful approach than that suggested by Follow This. Our methodology and ambition gives us the flexibility to respond to a continuously changing landscape. We will need this flexibility as the energy transition plays out over the coming decades. In contrast, the Follow This resolution would tie our hands and limit our capacity to respond.“So, your board asks you to vote against this resolution and allow management to continue to implement the ambition we have announced. Your company wants to lead. We ask you to let us. Follow us! And your company is already taking action.”According to the AGM voting results released by Shell, some 95 percent of shareholders voted against the Follow This proposal.Van Beurden said Shell supported the goals of the Paris Agreement:“It supports them 100%. More than that, your company believes Paris, while challenging, is achievable, if the world can come together in a vast effort of collaboration: governments, businesses, civil society and consumers all pulling in the same direction.” Today’s the day! @markfjvanbaal kicks off the #shell #agm “who still dares to vote against?!” #resolution19 #followthis @shell #greenshell pic.twitter.com/k5VfJfaKL4— Follow This (@followthis2015) May 22, 2018Shell’s board of directors unanimously recommended its shareholders to vote against the Follow This proposal, deeming it potentially damaging to the company’s business, and unnecessary, given Shell’s own Shell’s own” industry-leading net carbon footprint ambition.”Speaking ahead of the AGM, Mark van Baal, founder of Follow This said the board’s recommendation against the resolutions “demonstrates a clear lack of realism in what we need to do to address this issue seriously.”He said:”Fellow shareholders, Shell still needs more support to take meaningful action. The resolution asks for no more and no less than a commitment to achieving the goal of the Paris agreement. Shell’s current ambitions (20% emission reduction by 2035, 50% by 2050) effectively allow the company to continue business as usual for decades. Apparently not one single director of the, perhaps, soon-to-be biggest oil company in the world can imagine a future energy mix without oil and gas in this century.“We think a board of such a powerful company needs more diversity. We think a board of such a powerful company needs at least one director who differs from opinion about imagination beyond all and gas, sense of urgency, commitment to Paris, and leadership in the energy transition. This is not what the world’s investors want. Shell’s ambition is to follow society. The climate resolution asks for more – for leadership.”last_img read more

DD Medical Matters: Glandular Fever – what is it and how do I treat it?

first_imgThis week, Dr Ciarán Roarty of Scally McDaid Roarty Medical Practice looks at Glandular Fever. What is Glandular Fever? This is an infection usually in young adults and teenagers which is caused by a virus which passes from person to person in close contact eg. kissing but also through sharing cups etc. It causes a number of symptoms including a sore throat with swollen glands (usually the neck glands are most noticeable ) as well as flu-like symptoms such as temperatures, aches and headaches. Some people develop puffy eyes. The spleen which is located below the ribs on the left side can swell and sometimes become tender. How do I know if I have it?The symptoms can be similar to other viral illnesses so if your doctor suspects Glandular Fever they may organise a blood test to confirm the diagnosis. How is it treated?Like a lot of viral illnesses, no specific treatment is required. Fluids and rest along with pain relief medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen is the usual advice. Avoidance of close contact with others will help reduce the chance of spreading Glandular Fever. Alcohol can make symptoms much worse and should be avoided. Antibiotics do not work for viruses and are therefore not beneficial, unless your doctor feels a secondary bacterial throat infection has set in. Does it take long to settle? Most people recover in a few weeks, occasionally longer and it is unusual to develop it a second time. Complications are unusual but include damage to the spleen. As it is swollen it is more prone to harm if trauma occurs. Usually, this is why your doctor will recommend avoiding contact sports for at least 8 weeks. Some people can develop a red rash which is not itchy. Others may develop jaundice (a yellow tinge of the skin and whites of your eyes). It is quite common to feel low or a bit down during the infection with tiredness. This usually clears in time. The above information is intended as advice only and should you have any concerns please contact your own Doctor. Dr Ciarán Roarty MB, BCh BAO MICGP DRCOG Grad. Cert. Obst. Empower Shack low-cost housing project nominated for UK design prize

first_imgAn innovative, low-cost housing solution that could help to alleviate South Africa’s housing shortage has been long-listed for the Royal Institute of British Architects International Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious design awards.Using affordable materials such as iron sheeting, plywood and hollow-core bricks, the Empower Shack is a modern and affordable multi-storey structure that is minimalist and focused on function, safety and affordability without losing its aesthetic appeal. (Image: Urban-Think Tank)CD AndersonCalled Empower Shack, the project was launched in 2013 by a team of South African and international architects and designers under the name Urban-Think Tank (U-TT).The result of the group’s main Empower Shack project, which takes a fresh approach to using affordable materials such as iron sheeting, plywood and hollow-core bricks, is a modern and affordable double-storey structure, complete with balcony, living area, kitchen and bedrooms. The structure is minimalist and focused on function, safety and affordability without losing its aesthetic appeal.More than 20 prototype units have been built in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.“Although alternative schemes have emerged since the official shift in housing provision in 2004, the challenge still lies in developing a scalable, transparent and replicable model that addresses real demand, market dynamics and municipal planning objectives,” say the designers on their website. The Empower Shack design attempts to address these challenges. The housing units occupy a smaller portion of the usual slum dwelling footprint, leaving fire break spaces that give emergency services easy access. The houses are arranged around a sanitation core, providing water and toilets on site. A second level or even a third can be added if needed, to accommodate different family sizes. The denser accommodation means land is used more efficiently and guarantees residents can remain at the same site, keeping community ties intact. Community members who live in the units also become long-term stakeholders in the project.Using affordable materials such as iron sheeting, plywood and hollow-core bricks, the Empower Shack is a modern and affordable multi-storey structure that is minimalist and focused on function, safety and affordability without losing its aesthetic appeal. (Image: Urban-Think Tank)In addition, the project hopes to widen residents’ economic and social possibilities. Integrated livelihood programmes include community workshops and renewable energy and water management training.Micro-financing schemes are built into the planning tools, allowing residents to take out small, ethical loans when building an Empower Shack or adding another storey.“The building units are priced to meet meaningful financial contributions from recipients by designing generous but robust living spaces and service cores that meet building code obligations through fit-for-purpose bridge contracts,” say the designers.Using affordable materials such as iron sheeting, plywood and hollow-core bricks, the Empower Shack is a modern and affordable multi-storey structure that is minimalist and focused on function, safety and affordability without losing its aesthetic appeal. (Image: Urban-Think Tank)In the long term, Urban-Think Tank hopes to influence government housing policy and provide access to diverse housing for South Africa’s gap market. The Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) International Prize is awarded to a building that best exemplifies design excellence and architectural ambition.“Most importantly, this significant selection of the 62 [global] projects illustrates the meaningful impact and transformative quality that well-designed buildings can have on communities, wherever they are in the world,” said Riba president Ben Derbyshire during the announcement of the nominees. The winner of the prize will be announced later in the year. For more information about Urban-Think Tank and the Empower Shack, visit the website here.Source: Huffington Post, Dezeen Architecture website, Urban-Think TankWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Studio Binder: The Call Sheet You Won’t Throw Away

first_imgStudio Binder is the intelligent call sheet creator you never knew you needed.I’m going to go ahead and say it… call sheets are a pain. Nonetheless, they are a necessary part of the film production process. If you’re not already familiar with the term, a call sheet is simply a form designed to communicate important production information to your crew.A typical call sheet will have call times, emergency contact information, parking info, and more. It answers most of the routine questions that crew members may have about a production location so you, the director/producer/AD, can focus on other areas of the production process.Practically speaking, there’s nothing incredibly complex about a call sheet; they just take time to fill out. However, the time spent filling out your call sheet could be used to focus on other areas of your production.A screenshot of the free call sheet template found here on PremiumBeat. Traditionally, call sheets have been filled out by hand or computer, then emailed as a PDF to the crew. A simple search will yield hundreds of free PDF call sheet templates including our very own free call sheet template here on PremiumBeat. But all of these documents have the same problem — you must fill them out by hand. This is the problem that Studio Binder looks to fix. What is Studio Binder?Studio Binder is an online call sheet creator that optimizes the creation, organization, and distribution of call sheets. Studio Binder makes creating call sheets easy through a sleek and minimal interface. The service allows you to easily create projects and assign contacts to various roles in the production. Studio Binder will save your contacts into their database. This will easily allow you to assign crew members to future productions. After assigning roles and creating your contacts, it’s time to begin filling out the call sheet. The call sheet works almost like filling out an online survey. You will be prompted to fill out various fields like title, location, and nearest hospital, but unlike traditional PDF call sheets, Studio Binder is intelligent. When you begin typing in a location, the address will autofill using, presumably, an online address API.The same is true for nearby hospitals. Instead of having to lookup the hospital address or phone number, Studio Binder will autofill the hospital name as soon as you begin typing the name. Studio Binder will even automatically show what the weather will be like for your location at the time on the call sheet. After you fill out necessary fields, it’s time to create the daily schedule. Studio Binder makes scheduling a breeze. Using their easy calendar system, you can drag and drop cards for scenes, important events, and moves. It’s incredibly easy to use. In fact, I find it much easier to use than similar calendar services like Google Calendars.Studio Binder also allows you to send personal messages to individual crew members in their call sheet email. After you complete the call sheet, Studio Binder will automatically send a custom email to the cast and crew in your list. By far the best feature is the email tracking inside of Studio Binder. As the creator of the call sheet, you can monitor who has opened their email and who has confirmed to be there. No more “I didn’t see the email!”What We (Honestly) ThinkWe aren’t paid to write reviews here on PremiumBeat. We choose to review tools if they look promising to the industry. Studio Binder is one such tool. Studio Binder has the power to radically improve your production process. Through sleek design and a wonderful user experience, Studio Binder doesn’t just make creating call sheets not boring… it actually makes it fun.The only negative that we can see with Studio Binder is the price. You can only send 15 call sheets a month using the free plan. They have paid plans that range from $5 a month (35 call sheets), all the way up to $285 a month (800 call sheets). They are also offering PremiumBeat readers 25% off a 3 month subscription if you just use the code ‘PREMBEAT’ at checkout.I highly recommend at least checking out the free version to see if Studio Binder might be a good fit for your next production. Studio Binder has also let us know that they’ll bring online file sharing to their service in the near future. What’s your experience with Studio Binder? Do you know of any other helpful tools for creating call sheets? Share in the comments below.last_img read more

What It Means to Hustle

first_imgThe idea that you should hustle means that you should work harder, that you should work with a great sense of urgency, and that you should focus your attention on the very few things that actually produce results. It has nothing to do with the hours you work. It doesn’t require an 18 hour day, but there is nothing wrong with working long days if that is what you need to do.It has nothing to do with being an entrepreneur unless you are an entrepreneur. You can hustle while you are working for the man, and that can be an extraordinarily rewarding endeavor. Jamie Dimon reports to a board of directors, and he owns some shares. Not the company.Hard Work Makes Dreams Come TrueYou aren’t “hustling” just because you have a startup, unless you are working hard. Talking about your business is not the same thing as doing the work of propping up a business. It sure as Hell isn’t about showing up at conferences with a business card and tee shirt with your logo on it.To hustle is to work hard.Act With HasteToo few people work with a sense of urgency. Instead, they spend their days “at work,” reacting to things that come their way, almost none of which is urgent. Urgency is what makes you a hustler. In the words of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Burr, “Why do you write like you’re running out of time? Write day and night like you’re running out of time. Every day you fight like you’re running out of time . . .”To hustle is to work like you are running out of time. Time, the one finite, completely non-renewable resource of which you are given an allotment free and clear, yours to do with what you will. Or yours to squander. Waste not, want not.Do Meaningful WorkMost of the things that have your attention do not deserve your attention. Almost everything is a distraction. Except the very things that produce the results that you want to produce. The things that are aligned with your purpose. The things that make up the meaningful work you were put here to do.Hustle isn’t talk. Hustle isn’t glamorous. Hustle isn’t hours worked. It’s the hard work that most people won’t do because they’d rather be comfortable than stretched. It’s the sense of urgency that compels you to produce. Today.Right now. It’s the one, two, or three things that produce results and make a difference, the things you are going to point to as your contribution and your legacy. Are you working like you’re running out of time? You are running out of time.last_img read more
