Southampton confirm signing of Portugal international to provide competition to Nathaniel Clyne

first_imgSouthampton have confirmed the signing of Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares. The Portuguese defender has signed a four-year contract at St Mary’s for a fee reportedly in the region of £3.6million.The Saints have quickly followed on from Tuesday’s deal for Spain international Juanmi to sign Soares, who recently returned from international duty. After penning the deal, the 23-year-old said: “Southampton is a big, big club in England and is very respected. It’s a club with a lot of history and, for me, it’s very important to play for a big club. I think this is a very good move.“I joined this club because I believe we can do better and better every year.”While previous reports suggested the deal would pave the way for Nathaniel Clyne to move to Liverpool, sources close to the club insist Soares has been signed to provide competition to the England right-back.The Reds had an initial £10million bid rejected by the Saints earlier this month and are yet to return with an improved offer for the 24-year-old.
