Inishowen 5G campaigners claim Gardaí forced an end to public protest on election day

first_imgAn Inishowen 5G campaigning group claim that Gardaí brought a halt to their protest outside a polling station on election day last week. Members from the 5G awareness campaign say they were forced to stop protesting action outside Scoiíl Lasagán polling station on Friday last.A member from the group said that Gardaí had approached them while they were distributing leaflets and collecting signatures against plans to install 3G, 4G and Electric Magnetic Frequency (EMF) equipment on the existing Garda mast in Buncrana. A spokesperson for the group said: “I was informed by Gardaí that they received a complaint from a member of the public and that under Section 147 of the Electoral Act 1992 they told us to remove our posters and leave.“Despite not knowing the legislation, I informed the Gardaí that I thought they were wrong since we were not canvassing or soliciting for any candidate, had nothing to do with the election and were standing in a private churchyard car park well away from the polling station entrance.“I have since looked up the relevant section 147 and it seems to me that the Gardaí interpretation is very narrow or downright wrong and that the overall emphasis is on canvassing, promoting candidates or influencing voters.”However, Gardai refuted the claim and said while they were aware of the group’s presence, they didn’t have an issue with the their presence on the day.
