Apparently one of the reasons why the final season of Game of Thrones ended being such an abbreviated disappointing mess was due to ongoing shake-ups at HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia as they prepare their own streaming service. Resources needed to shift from the expensive show to build something capable of taking on Netflix and Disney+. This is also why the cool but niche DC Universe streaming app seems like it’s on its way out.We don’t know if those rumors are true. But what is true is that WarnerMedia is launching a streaming TV service. And now we know the first details of HBO Max.As the name implies, HBO Max takes the content of the premium TV channel we all know and love and supersizes it with shows from across the WarnerMedia entertainment empire. So not just Game of Thrones and Big Little Lies but also programming from Warner Bros., New Line, DC Entertainment, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, and Looney Tunes. It’s a lot.Greg Berlanti and Reese Witherspoon are both producing original films for the service, but HBO Max’s nostalgia trump card is the entire back catalog classic sitcoms The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Friends. Netflix infamously paid $100 million to keep Friends on the service in 2019. But that deal is up once HBO Max launches in spring 2020. It’s The Office all over again. For more on streaming check out the best media streaming devices and learn more about the huge ongoing streaming service wars on our sister site PCMag.com.View as: One Page Slides1/201.
